The Heart of a Staycation: Slowing Down Together
A staycation isn’t just time off — it’s a gentle shift toward presence, connection, and simplicity. Family vacation can bring to mind good memories and more challenging ones. Before you begin family staycation activities. set a peaceful tone by tidying lightly, planning simple meals, and letting your kids know this week is meant to feel special.
A staycation is less about doing and more about being. Being present and connected in a way that can be hard during the busy times in our lives. It’s a chance to rediscover the magic tucked inside your everyday life.
Backyard Nature Day

Your backyard becomes a place of exploration when you take time to slow down enough to notice it.
Activities
- Nature scavenger hunt- this is the perfect way to take time for a short walk around your property. The natural setting of your own yard can bring out your creative side. We planted flowers to create a butterfly garden in one part of our yard. The packet of wildflowers were inexpensive and easy to sow.
- Bug observation with a magnifying glass-it is easy to find all kinds of bugs and creepy crawlies outside. We purchased magnifying glasses at a dollar store.
- Cloud watching- always a fun pass time. This is pure magic. You often do not see the cloud shape until someone else does. This is an activity each family member can enjoy.
- Bird listening- I recently discovered an app called Merlin which is now my top pick to identify the many birds we hear outside. I use this for walks alone or with kids.
Why It’s Perfect for a Staycation
Kids naturally tune into small details outdoors. A backyard nature day invites curiosity and calm and is a good option for family staycation activities.
Slow Kitchen Time
Invite your kids into the kitchen for slow, simple cooking a great way to celebrate family staycation activities. The whole family can play a part in creating breakfast or really any meal.
Ideas
- Homemade pancakes – are an easy option that can be adapted to different taste preferences. We usually serve a variety of toppings alongside the pancakes (think fresh fruit, maple syrup, Nutella, whipped cream).
- Fresh bread or rolls are fun to create and enjoy later. The best time to start this is in the morning.
- A “vacation breakfast bar”- can be a good idea and works well if you have kids who are “picky”.
- Letting kids choose a recipe- this can really open up your dining options and allows creativity from your kids. I usually supervise the choice and give the final approval.
Cooking together builds confidence and creates memories with your kids. The kitchen is a great spot to do some bonding but also teaching kids to cook is a life-long skill they will thank you for someday.
Cozy Reading Retreat
Transform a corner of your home into a soft, inviting reading nook is an example of simple family staycation activities that all ages will love. Little kids and big kids and even the adults in your house will love a reading nook.
What You Need
- Pillows-soft and comfortable pillows.
- Blankets- light wraps and blankets are comforting as you fall into the setting of your book.
- A basket of books- it is best to include different genres and books suitable for different age groups.
- Comfortable seating- this is a must. It can be a beanbag chair, or a plush wingback chair, pillows, or a recliner.
Reading slows the mind and allows the creative sides of our brain to fully engage.
Simple Creative Projects
Creative time can be simple and easy to do.
Ideas
- Nature art-choose materials found in nature to create. We have collected leaves and used them in art we created.
- Homemade playdough- there are many simple recipes online. This allows kids to use cookie cutters and other tools to create. Best of all it is non-toxic and easy to clean up.
- Rock painting- rock painting can include single rocks or painting smaller rocks to create a larger design. We use different designs and often look in nature for design and color palate ideas.
- Watercolor sessions- we always have paint supplies available. You can set up the paints and use cardboard, cardstock or inexpensive canvases to create.
- DIY bookmarks- we fashion bookmarks by creating new bookmarks with original designs. I have used an inexpensive laminator to make the bookmarks more durable.
Creativity helps kids express themselves and gives parents a chance to watch or work alongside the kids.
Backyard Picnic
A picnic adds a sense of adventure without leaving home. You can use the natural areas you have in your backyard or nearby to create an experience that is both fun and adventurous. Picnics can be special events with a few simple touches. Sometimes the best places are right at home or nearby.
What You Need
- A blanket – or something to spread out to sit on. We keep a heavy-duty blanket in our car in case we choose to do an impromptu picnic.
- Simple foods- make it foods that are easy to hold, easy to eat, and taste great cold or at room temperature.
- Lemonade, iced tea, or water- bring your favorite drink.
- A shady spot- a shady spot is nice if it is during a sunny day.
Activities
- Storytelling-we use family story-telling as an activity,
- Drawing-consider keeping pads of paper and drawing pencils with your picnic gear.
- Listening to birds- we use a free app to identify different birds.
Water Day

A water day is soothing, playful, and perfect for unwinding. You can incorporate easy water activities such as a sprinkler or simple wading pool. Even older kids love a sprinkler. We usually have ice cream or frozen treats to end one of our beach days.
Ideas
- Water table- this can be an actual water table or simply water in a large plastic tote or container that allows room for pouring and mixing water.
- Play in the pool or pond- our kids love both. A combination of water play and learning how to swim create opportunities for fun for years to come. We have a pond and for a special treat our kids like to go to a large community outdoor pool.
- Fishing- this may be on your property or at a park or reservoir. There are many opportunities in your local community to drop a line.
Slow Movie Night
Make movie night feel intentional and fun. You can do movie night in the house or in your own backyard. We have tried both ways.
How to Set the Mood
- Dim lights-allow everyone to find a comfortable spot. This might mean blankets and pillows on the floor.
- Cozy blankets-movie night always needs a cozy throw to set a relaxed tone.
- Homemade popcorn- popcorn made at home always tastes better. Pass out plenty of napkins for the buttery fingers you will have.
- Cocoa or herbal tea- this is an indulgence for me and perfect way to end any day.
Stargazing Evening
Spread blankets outside and look up together. We sometimes lie on the trampoline because it is more comfortable especially for the adults. The outdoors brings the opportunity for a wide range of activities.
Activities
- Identify constellations- we sometimes use an inexpensive telescope we have had for years, but if the sky is clear, you can see plenty without magnification.
- Tell stories – our kids love storytelling. We enjoy the creativity that this activity brings.
- Notice nighttime sounds- there are any nighttime sounds that we do not notice unless we are quiet and listening carefully.
Stargazing invites wonder. speculation, and quiet conversation.
Family Game Time
Choose calm, connection‑focused games that are fun and easy to play.
Ideas
- Dominoes- our kids love to play dominos. Simple game, yet fun for all ages.
- Memory games- this is one way I sneak in some learning when we play games.
- Cooperative board games- this is great team building and shows how we can accomplish more if we help others.
- Simple card games- our kids love Crazy 8’s, Canasta, and UNO. Look up simple and easy card game online and it will give you some great ideas.
- Puzzles-if you have room start a family puzzle. If space is limited, choose a design that can be completed in a shorter period of time.
Games help families bond without screens or distractions.
Garden Together
Gardening is important for both kids and adults. It is one of the good things in life. We can garden for food or for fun. I love the vegetables we eat fresh from the garden and the beautiful flower bouquets I receive from my husband. If you do not have a large plot of land container gardening is wonderful. There are many different, herbs, vegetables, and flowers you can easily grow in pots.
What Kids Can Do
- Plant seeds- kids love to plant seeds. I try to let them do this part on their own. It is empowering to kids to plant a seed and watch it grow.
- Water plants- caring for the plants is important. Watering is a task that all ages can assist with.
- Harvest herbs- Kids love to cut the herbs and flowers and place in containers. The containers can be as simple as a mason jar.
- Decorate pots- kids can customize the designs on their own pots. Paints and brushes can be purchased at a dollar store for just a few bucks and can be re-used for other activities.

Make a Family Memory Book
Create a simple keepsake together. We use clear plastic sleeves and a plastic binder. Inexpensive, yet a memory that kids will cherish for years.
What to Include
- Drawings- collect the “most important” artwork from the year and place in a binder to create a Family Memory Book.
- Favorite moments- you can have kids write about the special times they want to remember. It might be camp, or 4H Fair, or a family staycation event!
- Photos- photos can be taken from your phone and ordered inexpensively online or at a local CVS or Walgreens.
- Quotes from your kids- This is a great way to help you remember some of the funny things your kids say.
This becomes a treasure you and your children will look back on fondly as they get older.
Create a Slow Evening Ritual
End each staycation day with a gentle ritual that helps quiet you and your family as you prepare for bedtime.
Ideas
- Light a candle- this can put you into a more relaxing frame of mind.
- Share one thing you enjoyed- share one fun thing that happened that day.
- Read a short story-short stories lend themselves well to a slow evening. Choose content that will continue the theme of relaxing.
- Play soft music- music plays a huge role in our mood.
- Sit together quietly-we might each read a favorite book as we continue a slow evening.
These rituals help kids wind down and feel connected to their family and the world around us.
Explore Your Town Like a Tourist
You don’t need long travel days to discover something new and exciting. Outdoor fun can be had without traveling a far distance. Exploring an historic landmark is one of those family staycation activities that you will enjoy. Most cities and towns have specific attractions that celebrate the individual gifts of that community.
Simple Local Adventures
- A small park- you can have fun time at a park. Our kids love to explore unknown or seldom visited parks.
- A nature trail-anything that gives your kids to be outside and exploring is good for their minds and bodies.
- A local farm stand-this is especially helpful if you do not have the ability to grow your own produce. You can explore the local fruits and vegetables that are currently in season.
- A quiet café- a local restaurant can provide the calming atmosphere we crave when we need downtime.
- A community garden-these are wonderful opportunities to teach care of a garden like pulling weeds and watering and received fresh vegetables in return for the effort.
- Local Museums- every community boasts a local museum. It might include history about the area or it’s early inhabitants. If you have historic district in your community, it might be worth exploring.
Practice Doing Nothing Together
One of the most important family staycation activities is simply being still. Your ideal place can be home or close to home.
What “Nothing” Looks Like
- Sitting on the porch- sometimes the best things are the quiet times with family that kids will remember when they grow up and have children of their own.
- Listening to birds- I was astounded at the number of birds heard during a recent walk with the Merlin app.
- Resting on the couch- reading a book, work a crossword puzzle or take a quick nap.
- Letting the day unfold naturally- see what the day brings. If it rains, find an indoor activity to enjoy. If it hot, find some water to cool off with.
Kids learn so much from quiet moments. This provides an opportunity for rest in a busy world where most of us are pulled in so many different directions.
The Beauty of a Staycation
A staycation is a gentle invitation to slow down, reconnect, and savor the moments of ordinary life. Sometimes the best destinations are the ones closes to home. It’s a chance to be fully present with your kids — without the rush of travel, packing, and the recovery period after a vacation.
When you choose family staycation activities, you choose simplicity. You choose building a connection. You choose memories that grow from planned out or spontaneous intentional activities.
And those moments often become the ones your kids remember most. It is not always the most expensive and most elaborate vacations that kids remember, it is the times where they felt connected to their family that they will look back on and someday tell their own kids about. They will remember that feeling of belonging and connection to their family.
