4 Reasons Why We Love Our Garden

Onions from the garden.

I don’t know about you, but I love a summer garden. The food just tastes better when you grow it yourself. You can know without a doubt no chemicals or pesticides have ever touched it. My family used to have a small garden when we lived on a one-acre plot of land. Now we live on a 5.5 acre mini-farm. Big difference in what we can grow and where we can grow it. We can grow it in pots, alongside the porch and in traditional garden rows. There are so many reasons why we love our garden.

Reasons Why We Love our Garden: It is Healthier

There are several reasons we have embraced the garden this year. As I mentioned previously, we do not put pesticides or chemicals on the food we are growing for our family. That is the primary reason we choose to grow our own food. That piece of mind is important. There have been numerous studies about the possible harmful effects of chemicals sprayed on our food. I understand that giant commercial farming operations feel like they have to use chemicals, but I do not have to follow those same practices. I can choose heirloom seeds when possible. I can choose not to use chemicals on the food we grow.

Reasons Why We Love Our Garden: Use What We Have

Another reason why we love our garden is we love the idea of making use of this beautiful land God has provided for us. It is always wonderful to see what a few simple ingredients and time can make. The seeds, water, sunshine, and time allows us to benefit with a harvest fit for a king. There is something so comforting about watching the changes that happen from seed to vegetable. There are few things better than picking some fresh tomatoes on your morning walk around your farm.

Final Reason: Cost Savings

Cost is another reason why we love garden. Produce can be very expensive depending on the item and the time of the year. I used to choose what was in season, but it was still costly at times. Seeds are inexpensive. My brother gave us some tomato plants, onion sets, and squash plants. They were all tiny little things just a couple of inches tall. These little plants have already produced food that we have ate and shared with anyone stopping by. People that do not have a garden are very appreciative to leave with some tomatoes or cucumbers. We can be generous and still have plenty for ourselves.

The final reason why we love our garden is the health aspect. Vegetables are good for us! If I have vegetables on my plate I can fill up and not be miserable later or feel guilty. Most people do not consume enough vegetables for a number of reasons. Our garden bounty tastes so good. The taste of sweet corn fresh from the garden is hard to beat.

There you have it some of the reasons we love our garden. Our food is safe to eat, we love using our land to produce food. It is inexpensive, and vegetables are healthy. It does take some work but, the end result is well worth the wait and time involved. What are some of the reasons a garden is important to you?
